UTAD Hosts Workshop on Climate Change Challenges and Solutions for Viticulture

On March 28, the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD) in Portugal hosted the workshop “Challenges & Solutions for Viticulture in Times of Climate Change.” Bringing together 24 researchers, industry stakeholders, and professionals from the viticulture and enology sectors, the event served as a platform to discuss adaptation strategies in response to climate change.

Held at the Laboratory Complex of Quinta de Prados, the workshop opened at 14:15 with a session on “The Impacts of Climate Change,” providing insights into how shifting weather patterns are affecting vineyards and wine production. A collaborative session followed, encouraging participants to share experiences and perspectives.

After a networking coffee break, the discussion resumed with a focus on “Adaptation and Mitigation Measures.” Experts and industry representatives explored innovative solutions to enhance vineyard resilience, from soil management techniques to sustainable water use and climate-smart grape varieties.

To further engage participants, a survey was distributed during the event, gathering insights into sector perceptions regarding climate change impacts and the effectiveness of adaptation strategies.

The event underscored the increasing urgency of addressing climate-related challenges in viticulture and highlighted the importance of collaboration between researchers, winemakers, and policymakers in developing sustainable solutions. Under the MONTEVITIS project, the workshop reinforced the commitment of the wine sector to proactively tackle climate change and ensure a resilient future for viticulture.
